About this book

7.5 Standard form — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

Round $38.476$ to 2 decimal places.
Work out $3.4\times10$ .

Answers

$38.48$ .
$34$ .

Practise with help

1. Write $83\,000$ in standard form.

Hint

Move the decimal point so one non-zero digit stays before it.

Choose a step

Count four places from $83\,000$ to $8.3$ .

Full working

$83\,000=8.3\times10^4$ .

2. Work out $(2\times10^5)(3\times10^{-2})$ in standard form.

Hint

Multiply the first numbers and add the powers.

Choose a step

Work out $6\times10^3$ , then check the first number is between $1$ and $10$ .

Full working

$(2\times3)\times10^{5+(-2)}=6\times10^3$ .
