GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

25.4 Scatter graphs and correlation — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

  1. In the coordinate (3,8)(3,8), which value is horizontal?
  2. If a graph rises from left to right, is its gradient positive or negative?
Feedback
  1. The first value, 33. 2. Positive.

Practise with help

1. Study the pairs (1,4),(2,6),(3,7),(4,10)(1,4),(2,6),(3,7),(4,10). Describe the correlation.

Hint

Look at whether the second value tends to rise as the first rises.

Step

The second values generally increase.

Full working

The data show positive correlation. Plot the pairs to see the upward pattern.

2. A line of best fit predicts 40 units at x=0x=0 and 60 units at x=5x=5. Estimate the value at x=3x=3.

Hint

Find the increase per unit of xx.

Step

The increase is 2020 over 5 units, or 4 per unit.

Full working

Estimate 40+3×4=5240+3\times4=52 units.

3. Earlier work: a data set has median 12 and another has median 18. Which has the greater median?

Hint

Compare the two values.

Step

Since 18>1218>12, the second median is greater.

Full working

The second data set has the greater median, 18.
