7.4 Upper and lower bounds — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

  1. Write the interval for 4.64.6 cm rounded to the nearest 0.10.1 cm.
  2. Work out 1.5×801.5\times80.
Answers
  1. 4.55≤L<4.654.55\leq L<4.65 cm.
  2. 120120.

Practise with help

1. A mass rounds to 250250 g to the nearest 1010 g. State both bounds.

Hint

The rounding step is 1010 g, so the half-step is 55 g.

Choose a step

Subtract 55 g for the lower bound and add 55 g for the upper boundary.

Full working

245≤m<255245\leq m<255 g; lower bound 245245, upper bound 255255.

2. A rectangle has length 6.26.2 cm and width 3.43.4 cm, each to the nearest 0.10.1 cm. Find the upper bound for its area.

Hint

Use the upper boundary for each positive length.

Choose a step

The upper boundaries are 6.256.25 cm and 3.453.45 cm. Multiply them.

Full working

6.25×3.45=21.56256.25\times3.45=21.5625 cm2^2.
