GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

25.5 Comparing distributions and outliers — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

  1. Find the IQR when Q1=5Q_1=5 and Q3=14Q_3=14.
  2. Find the median of 4,7,9,12,154,7,9,12,15.
Feedback
  1. 99. 2. 99.

Practise with help

1. Group A has median 12 and IQR 4. Group B has median 15 and IQR 7. Compare typical values and middle-half spread.

Hint

Compare medians for typical values and IQRs for middle-half spread.

Step

Compare 1515 with 1212, then compare 77 with 44.

Full working

Group B has the higher median and the larger IQR. Its typical value is higher, and its middle half is more spread out.

2. A data set has Q1=10Q_1=10, Q3=18Q_3=18. Find both IQR fences.

Hint

First calculate the IQR. Then subtract or add 1.5 IQR.

Step

IQR =8=8; 1.5×8=121.5\times8=12.

Full working

Lower fence =10−12=−2=10-12=-2. Upper fence =18+12=30=18+12=30.

3. Earlier work: find the median of 5,8,12,14,215,8,12,14,21.

Hint

The list is ordered. Choose the middle value.

Step

The third value is in the middle.

Full working

The median is 1212.
