25.1 Quartiles, interquartile range and box plots — Practise

  1. H Find the median, lower quartile and upper quartile of 3,5,7,8,10,12,14,183, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18.
  2. H The quartiles are Q1=14Q_1=14 and Q3=26Q_3=26. Work out the interquartile range.
  3. H For 4,6,8,9,11,13,15,204, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 20, write the five-number summary using the median-of-halves convention.
  4. H A box plot has minimum 55, lower quartile 99, median 1212, upper quartile 1818 and maximum 2323. Work out its IQR and range.
  5. H Group A has Q1=11Q_1=11 and Q3=19Q_3=19. Group B has Q1=8Q_1=8 and Q3=21Q_3=21. Which group has the larger middle-half spread?
  6. H For 2,4,5,7,9,10,12,16,18,202, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, 18, 20, find the median and quartiles using the median-of-halves convention.
  7. H The lower quartile is 3232 and the IQR is 1515. Work out the upper quartile.
  8. H The middle half of one group lies between 2424 and 3838. Work out the IQR and state what it measures.
  9. H A box plot uses a scale from 00 to 5050. Its median is at 3030, and its quartiles are 1818 and 3636. Work out the IQR.
Answers and concise solutions

1. Quartiles of the list

Answer: Median =9=9, Q1=6Q_1=6, Q3=13Q_3=13.

2. Interquartile range

Answer: 26−14=1226-14=12.

3. Five-number summary

Answer: Minimum 44, Q1=7Q_1=7, median 1010, Q3=14Q_3=14, maximum 2020.

4. IQR and range

Answer: IQR =18−9=9=18-9=9; range =23−5=18=23-5=18.

5. Compare middle-half spread

Answer: Group A has IQR 88; Group B has IQR 1313. Group B has the larger spread.

6. Median and quartiles

Answer: Median =9.5=9.5, Q1=5Q_1=5, Q3=16Q_3=16.

7. Upper quartile

Answer: Q3=32+15=47Q_3=32+15=47.

8. Interpret the IQR

Answer: IQR =14=14. It is the spread of the middle half of the values.

9. IQR from quartiles

Answer: 36−18=1836-18=18.
