24.1 Collecting data, sampling and questionnaires — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

Closed book: Write 1830\frac{18}{30} in its simplest form, then work out 20%20\% of 150.

Check your answers

1830=35\frac{18}{30}=\frac35, and 20%20\% of 150 is 30. If either answer differs, revisit equivalent fractions and percentages before continuing.

Question 1

Estimate the number of pupils who prefer football in a group of 240, if 18 of 30 sampled pupils do.

Hint

Use the sample fraction.

Next step

Multiply the sample fraction by the population.

Full working

The sample fraction is 18/30=0.618/30=0.6. Estimate 0.6×240=1440.6\times240=144 pupils.

Question 2

Improve this question: “You like the new canteen menu, do you not?”

Hint

Look for wording that suggests an answer.

Next step

Ask for an opinion without suggesting a preferred answer.

Full working

For example: “What do you think of the new canteen menu?”

Question 3

A sample of 50 pupils has 15 who walk. Estimate the percentage.

Hint

Divide the count by the sample size.

Next step

Multiply the fraction of the sample by 100.

Full working

The fraction is 15/50=0.315/50=0.3. Convert it to a percentage: 0.3×100=30%0.3\times100=30\%.
