GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

24.3 Averages and range — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

Closed book: Put 7,2,9,47, 2, 9, 4 in order from smallest to largest, then work out 7+9+47+9+4.

Check your answers

The order is 2, 4, 7, 9, and 7+9+4=207+9+4=20. If either answer differs, revisit ordering numbers and addition before continuing.

Question 1

Order 4,1,34, 1, 3 from smallest to largest and write the middle value.

Hint

Put the values in order first, then look at the one in the middle.

Next step

In order the values are 1,3,41, 3, 4.

Full working

The middle value is 3, so the median is 3.

Question 2

Find the mean of 2, 4, 6.

Hint

Add the values, then divide by how many values there are.

Next step

The total is 2+4+6=122+4+6=12, and there are 3 values.

Full working

Mean =12÷3=4=12\div3=4.

Question 3

Find the median and range of 2, 3, 3, 8.

Hint

For the median, find the middle of the ordered list. For the range, subtract the smallest value from the largest.

Next step

The middle pair is the 2nd and 3rd values, which are both 3.

Full working

Median =(3+3)÷2=3=(3+3)\div2=3; range =8−2=6=8-2=6.
