GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

22.1 Vector notation and column vectors — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

  1. Point AA has coordinates (2,1)(2,1). Move it 3 right and 2 down. What are the new coordinates?
  2. What is the horizontal change from x=4x=4 to x=−1x=-1?
Answers and feedback
  1. (5,−1)(5,-1): add 3 to the horizontal coordinate and subtract 2 from the vertical coordinate.
  2. −1−4=−5-1-4=-5, so the change is 5 units left.

Practise with help

1. Point P=(−2,3)P=(-2,3) is translated by (4−5)\begin{pmatrix}4\\-5\end{pmatrix}. Find its image.

Hint

Add the top component to the horizontal coordinate and the lower component to the vertical coordinate.

Next step

The new coordinates are (−2+4, 3−5)(-2+4,\ 3-5).

Full working

(2,−2)(2,-2), because −2+4=2-2+4=2 and 3−5=−23-5=-2.

2. Find the vector from A=(3,−2)A=(3,-2) to B=(−1,4)B=(-1,4).

Hint

Subtract the start coordinates from the end coordinates.

Next step

The changes are −1−3-1-3 horizontally and 4−(−2)4-(-2) vertically.

Full working

AB→=(−46)\overrightarrow{AB}=\begin{pmatrix}-4\\6\end{pmatrix}: move 4 left and 6 up.

3. Describe the translation represented by (−3−2)\begin{pmatrix}-3\\-2\end{pmatrix}.

Hint

Read the top entry as horizontal movement and the lower entry as vertical movement.

Next step

Both entries are negative, so both movements are in the negative directions.

Full working

Move 3 units left and 2 units down. This is a 2D translation vector.

4. An arrow starts at (−1,2)(-1,2) and ends at (2,0)(2,0). Write its column vector.

Hint

Find end minus start for each coordinate.

Next step

Horizontal change =2−(−1)=2-(-1); vertical change =0−2=0-2.

Full working

(3−2)\begin{pmatrix}3\\-2\end{pmatrix}.

5. Draw (23)\begin{pmatrix}2\\3\end{pmatrix} as an arrow from the origin on squared paper.

Hint

Start at (0,0)(0,0), then move right before moving up.

Next step

Mark the endpoint (2,3)(2,3) and draw an arrow from the origin.

Full working

The arrow runs from (0,0)(0,0) to (2,3)(2,3). Any parallel arrow with the same direction and length represents the same vector.

6. In the chapter problem, write the vector from AA to CC using the side vectors u\mathbf{u} and v\mathbf{v}.

Hint

Follow the route from AA to BB, then from BB to CC.

Next step

The route is u\mathbf{u} followed by v\mathbf{v}.

Full working

AC→=u+v\overrightarrow{AC}=\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}. We will calculate such sums in section 22.2.
