GCSE Mathematics (9-1)
  1. H In triangle ABCABC, AB→=a\overrightarrow{AB}=\mathbf{a} and BC→=b\overrightarrow{BC}=\mathbf{b}. Find AC→\overrightarrow{AC}.
  2. H If AB→=u+v\overrightarrow{AB}=\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}, write BA→\overrightarrow{BA}.
  3. H In parallelogram ABCDABCD, AB→=u\overrightarrow{AB}=\mathbf{u} and AD→=v\overrightarrow{AD}=\mathbf{v}. Find AC→\overrightarrow{AC}.
  4. H In the same parallelogram, find DB→\overrightarrow{DB}.
  5. H A segment has endpoint position vectors p\mathbf{p} and q\mathbf{q}. Write the midpoint position vector.
  6. H In parallelogram ABCDABCD, take AA as the origin, with B=uB=\mathbf{u} and D=vD=\mathbf{v}. Show the diagonals have the same midpoint.
  7. H In triangle OABOAB, the position vectors of AA and BB are a\mathbf{a} and b\mathbf{b}. Point MM is the midpoint of ABAB. Find OM→\overrightarrow{OM}.
  8. H A quadrilateral has successive side vectors p\mathbf{p}, q\mathbf{q}, −p-\mathbf{p} and −q-\mathbf{q}. Explain why it closes.
  9. H Point PP is the midpoint of ABAB and point QQ is the midpoint of BCBC, where AB→=u\overrightarrow{AB}=\mathbf{u} and BC→=v\overrightarrow{BC}=\mathbf{v}. Which method finds PQ→\overrightarrow{PQ}: add the route vectors through BB, or halve the diagonal ACAC? Give a reason, then find it.
Answers and concise solutions

1. Vector AC

Answer: AC→=a+b\overrightarrow{AC}=\mathbf{a}+\mathbf{b}, by adding the two route vectors.

2. Reverse vector

Answer: BA→=−u−v\overrightarrow{BA}=-\mathbf{u}-\mathbf{v}.

3. Diagonal AC

Answer: AC→=u+v\overrightarrow{AC}=\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}.

4. Diagonal DB

Answer: DB→=u−v\overrightarrow{DB}=\mathbf{u}-\mathbf{v}, using DD to AA to BB.

5. Midpoint position vector

Answer: 12(p+q)\frac12(\mathbf{p}+\mathbf{q}).

6. Midpoint equality

Answer: C=u+vC=\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}. Midpoint of AC=12(u+v)AC=\frac12(\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}); midpoint of BD=12(u+v)BD=\frac12(\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}). The midpoints are equal, so the diagonals bisect each other.

7. Vector OM

Answer: OM→=12(a+b)\overrightarrow{OM}=\frac12(\mathbf{a}+\mathbf{b}).

8. Closure

Answer: The total vector is p+q−p−q=0\mathbf{p}+\mathbf{q}-\mathbf{p}-\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}, so the route returns to its start.

9. Method choice: route or diagonal

Answer: Add the route vectors through BB: PQ→=PB→+BQ→=−12u+12v=12(v−u)\overrightarrow{PQ}=\overrightarrow{PB}+\overrightarrow{BQ}=-\frac12\mathbf{u}+\frac12\mathbf{v}=\frac12(\mathbf{v}-\mathbf{u}). Halving the diagonal would give the midpoint of ACAC, not PQPQ.
