GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

18.1 Reflection, rotation and translation — Practise with help

Attempt these from memory before opening the answers. Then try each question before opening a hint.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Work out −3+8-3+8.
  2. Work out 4×64\times6.
Answers and feedback
  1. 55. Starting at −3-3 and moving 88 places right gives 55.
  2. 2424. Multiply 44 by 66.

Practise with help

1. Reflect (4,−2)(4,-2) in the yy-axis.

Hint

Change the sign of the coordinate perpendicular to the mirror line.

Next step

The yy-axis is vertical, so keep y=−2y=-2 and change x=4x=4 to −4-4.

Full working

Image (−4,−2)(-4,-2). The point and image have equal distances from the yy-axis.

2. Rotate (3,1)(3,1) by 90∘90^\circ anticlockwise about the origin.

Hint

Use (x,y)↦(−y,x)(x,y)\mapsto(-y,x).

Next step

Substitute x=3x=3 and y=1y=1 to get (−1,3)(-1,3).

Full working

The image is (−1,3)(-1,3) after a quarter-turn anticlockwise.

H 3. Translate the triangle with vertices (1,1)(1,1), (3,1)(3,1) and (1,2)(1,2) by (11)\begin{pmatrix}1\\1\end{pmatrix}. Then reflect it in the yy-axis and rotate it 90∘90^\circ clockwise about the origin. Give the image vertices. State what stays unchanged.

Hint

Use the translation first, then reflect, then use (x,y)↦(y,−x)(x,y)\mapsto(y,-x) for the clockwise turn.

Next step

After translating, the vertices are (2,2)(2,2), (4,2)(4,2) and (2,3)(2,3). After reflection, they are (−2,2)(-2,2), (−4,2)(-4,2) and (−2,3)(-2,3).

Full working

The final vertices are (2,2)(2,2), (2,4)(2,4) and (3,2)(3,2). Side lengths and angles stay unchanged.

4. Earlier topic: solve 3x=183x=18.

Hint

Use the inverse operation.

Next step

Divide both sides by 33.

Full working

x=6x=6.
