23.2 Relative frequency and expected outcomes — Practise with help

Work each question first. Open the hint if you need it, then reveal the working to check.

Warm-up: remember

Try these from memory before opening the answers.

  1. Write 34\frac34 as a percentage.
  2. Work out 20×1220\times\frac12.
Check
  1. 75%75\%. 2. 10.

Practise with help

1. A player scores 18 goals in 30 shots. Find the relative frequency of scoring.

Hint

Divide the number of successes by the number of trials.

Full working

Relative frequency =1830=0.6=\frac{18}{30}=0.6.

2. A fair six-sided die is rolled. Find the probability of a result less than 3.

Hint

List the die results that meet the condition, then divide by six.

Full working

The matching results are 1 and 2, so the probability is 26=13\frac26=\frac13.

3. A spinner lands on green 27 times in 60 spins. Find its relative frequency.

Hint

Divide the number of green results by the total number of spins.

Full working

2760=0.45\frac{27}{60}=0.45.
