11.4 Parallel and perpendicular lines — Practise

Work independently in order. The later questions mix this section with earlier methods. Questions marked H are Higher only.

  1. H Give the gradient of a line parallel to y=3x+2y=3x+2.
  2. H Give the gradient of a line perpendicular to y=2x−1y=2x-1.
  3. H Find the equation parallel to y=4x+1y=4x+1 through (0,−3)(0,-3).
  4. H Find the equation perpendicular to y=x+2y=x+2 through (0,5)(0,5).
  5. H Are y=2x+1y=2x+1 and y=2x−7y=2x-7 parallel? Give a reason.
  6. H Are gradients −3-3 and 1/31/3 perpendicular? Give a reason.
  7. H Find the line perpendicular to y=0.5x+3y=0.5x+3 through (2,1)(2,1).
  8. H A line parallel to y=−2x+1y=-2x+1 passes through (3,4)(3,4). Find its equation.
  9. H Find the gradient between (0,1)(0,1) and (2,5)(2,5). Is a line of gradient -2 perpendicular to it?
  10. H Solve 2x+3=112x+3=11, then state the gradient of a parallel line to y=2x−9y=2x-9.
  11. H Find equations of both lines through (1,2)(1,2) parallel and perpendicular to y=3x−1y=3x-1.
