GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

Chapter 13: Review

The chapter problem, solved

The signal crosses its middle value while rising, then reaches a maximum and minimum before repeating. This matches y=sin⁡xy=\sin x over one cycle, where 0∘≤x≤360∘0^\circ\leq x\leq360^\circ. The maximum occurs at 90∘90^\circ, the minimum at 270∘270^\circ, and the pattern repeats every 360∘360^\circ. A vertical shift changes its middle value; a vertical scale changes its height.

Mixed practice: choose a method and explain why

For each item, name the graph feature or method you will use before answering.

  1. Sketch the key features of y=x3−4xy=x^3-4x. Find its intercepts.
  2. State the centre and radius of (x−3)2+(y+1)2=16(x-3)^2+(y+1)^2=16.
  3. Solve sin⁡x=0\sin x=0 for 0∘≤x≤360∘0^\circ\leq x\leq360^\circ.
  4. Translate y=x2y=x^2 two units left and three units up.
  5. A radius has gradient 44. Find the tangent gradient and give a reason.
  6. State the asymptotes of y=1/xy=1/x and y=tan⁡xy=\tan x from 0∘0^\circ to 360∘360^\circ.
  7. The point (2,5)(2,5) lies on y=f(x)y=f(x). Give its image under y=f(x)−4y=f(x)-4.
  8. Which family models repeated equal percentage growth? Give a reason.
Answers
  1. x(x−2)(x+2)=0x(x-2)(x+2)=0, so the intercepts are (−2,0),(0,0),(2,0)(-2,0),(0,0),(2,0). The ends fall left and rise right.
  2. Centre (3,−1)(3,-1); radius 44.
  3. 0∘,180∘,360∘0^\circ,180^\circ,360^\circ.
  4. y=(x+2)2+3y=(x+2)^2+3.
  5. −1/4-1/4, because perpendicular gradients multiply to −1-1.
  6. Reciprocal: x=0x=0 and y=0y=0. Tangent: x=90∘x=90^\circ and 270∘270^\circ.
  7. (2,1)(2,1).
  8. Exponential, because equal input steps multiply the output by a fixed factor.
