GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

20.8 The area of any triangle — Practise with help

Try each problem first. Open a hint if you need it, then use the working to check your method.

Warm-up: remember

Answer these from memory. Do not look back at the section.

  1. Work out 12×10×4\frac{1}{2}\times10\times4.
  2. Write the sine ratio for an acute angle θ\theta.
Answers
  1. 2020. 2. sin⁡θ=oppositehypotenuse\sin\theta=\frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}}.

If an answer differs, revisit Section 19.1 for the area of a triangle and Section 20.2 for the sine ratio.

Practise with help

1. Sides 4 and 6 include 30°. Find area.

Hint

Use half the product times sine of included angle.

Full working

Area = 1/2 × 4 × 6 × sin30° = 6.

2. Sides 5 and 8 include 90°. Find area.

Hint

Sine of 90° is 1.

Full working

Area = 1/2 × 5 × 8 = 20.

3. Sides 7 and 10 include 60°. Find area exactly.

Hint

Substitute sin60° = √3/2.

Full working

Area = 35 × √3/2 = 35√3/2.

Before opening each full working, name the method and explain which measurements led you to choose it.
