GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

12.4 Solving quadratic equations by factorising — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

Answer these from memory. Do not look back at the section.

  1. Factorise x2−x−6x^2-x-6.
  2. Solve x+3=0x+3=0.
Check the warm-up
  1. (x−3)(x+2)(x-3)(x+2).
  2. x=−3x=-3.

If an answer differs, revisit Section 12.1 for factorising and Section 9.1 for solving a linear equation.

Practise with help

1. Solve x2+2x−8=0x^2+2x-8=0.

Hint

Factorise using two numbers with sum 22 and product −8-8.

Next step

Use the hint to write the next algebra line. Then finish the calculation before opening the full working.

Full working

(x+4)(x−2)=0(x+4)(x-2)=0, so x=−4x=-4 or x=2x=2.

Choose a method: factorise x2+7x+10x^2+7x+10. Which method applies, and why?

Full working

Factorisation applies because the expression is a monic quadratic with integer factors: x2+7x+10=(x+5)(x+2)x^2+7x+10=(x+5)(x+2).
