GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

15.1 Functions: inverse and composite — Practise with help

Work each problem before revealing support.

Warm-up: remember

Answer these from memory. Do not look back at the section.

  1. Substitute x=3x=3 into 2x+12x+1.
  2. Solve x+5=9x+5=9.
Check the warm-up
  1. 77.
  2. x=4x=4.

If an answer differs, revisit Section 8.5 for substitution and Section 9.1 for solving equations.

Practise with help

1. Find the inverse of f(x)=4x−7f(x)=4x-7.

Hint

Write y=4x−7y=4x-7, swap xx and yy, then make yy the subject.

First step

After swapping, x=4y−7x=4y-7. Add 77 to both sides.

Full working

x+7=4yx+7=4y, so y=x+74y=\frac{x+7}{4}. Thus f−1(x)=x+74f^{-1}(x)=\frac{x+7}{4}.
