GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

Chapter 15: Review

Return to the two machines

The first machine is f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3. The second is g(x)=x−32g(x)=\frac{x-3}{2}. For input 44, the first then second gives

g(f(4))=g(11)=4.g(f(4))=g(11)=4.

The second then first also gives

f(g(4))=f(0.5)=4.f(g(4))=f(0.5)=4.

These two rules are inverses, so each undoes the other. In general, g(f(x))=xg(f(x))=x and f(g(x))=xf(g(x))=x.

Mixed practice

Choose a method before working. Say why it fits, then check your result.

  1. Find the inverse of h(x)=5x−7h(x)=5x-7. Check by composing in both orders.
  2. Simplify x2−9x2+6x+9\frac{x^2-9}{x^2+6x+9} and state excluded values.
  3. Work out 2x+3x+1\frac{2}{x}+\frac{3}{x+1}, giving a simplified answer.
  4. Expand (x−4)(x+2)(x-4)(x+2), then factorise x2−2x−8x^2-2x-8. Explain how the results connect.
  5. Prove that the sum of three consecutive integers is divisible by 33.
  6. Chapter 12 revisited: solve x2−5x+6=0x^2-5x+6=0. Which method applies, and why?
  7. Chapter 14 revisited: solve y=2x+1y=2x+1 and y=x+4y=x+4 simultaneously. Which method applies, and why?
Check your answers
  1. h−1(x)=x+75h^{-1}(x)=\frac{x+7}{5}; both compositions simplify to xx.
  2. x−3x+3\frac{x-3}{x+3}, where x≠−3x\neq -3.
  3. 5x+2x(x+1)\frac{5x+2}{x(x+1)}, where x≠0,−1x\neq0,-1.
  4. Both give x2−2x−8x^2-2x-8.
  5. Let the integers be n−1,n,n+1n-1,n,n+1. Their sum is 3n3n.
  6. Factorise: (x−2)(x−3)=0(x-2)(x-3)=0, so x=2x=2 or x=3x=3.
  7. Equate: 2x+1=x+42x+1=x+4, so x=3x=3 and y=7y=7.

Which method can you now choose with more confidence? Name one question where you will check your answer by using an inverse operation or an equivalent form.
