GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

1.2 The four operations — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

  1. Write 4.06×1004.06 \times 100.
  2. Write the value of the digit 77 in 3.273.27.
  3. Which is larger, 0.50.5 or 0.450.45?
Answers
  1. 406406.
  2. 0.070.07.
  3. 0.5=0.50>0.450.5 = 0.50 > 0.45.

Practise with help

1. Work out 146+27.5146 + 27.5.

Hint

Write 146146 as 146.0146.0 so the tenths column is visible, then align the columns.

Full working

146.0+27.5=173.5146.0 + 27.5 = 173.5.

2. Work out 52.4−8.7552.4 - 8.75.

Hint

Write 52.452.4 as 52.4052.40 so both numbers have two decimal places.

Full working

52.40−8.75=43.6552.40 - 8.75 = 43.65.

3. Work out 46×2346 \times 23.

Hint

Split 2323 into 2020 and 33: find 46×2046 \times 20 and 46×346 \times 3, then add.

Full working

46×20=92046 \times 20 = 920 and 46×3=13846 \times 3 = 138, so 46×23=105846 \times 23 = 1058.

4. Work out 3.7×43.7 \times 4.

Hint

Work out 37×437 \times 4, then replace the decimal point (one decimal place).

Full working

37×4=14837 \times 4 = 148, so 3.7×4=14.83.7 \times 4 = 14.8.

5. Work out 9.6÷49.6 \div 4.

Hint

You can divide the whole number part and the tenths separately: 8÷4=28 \div 4 = 2 and 1.6÷4=0.41.6 \div 4 = 0.4.

Full working

9.6÷4=2.49.6 \div 4 = 2.4.

6. A box of 12 pens costs £8.40. Work out the cost of one pen, and check your answer.

Hint

Divide: 8.40÷128.40 \div 12. Check by multiplying your answer by 1212.

Full working

8.40÷12=0.708.40 \div 12 = 0.70, so one pen costs 70p. Check: 12×0.70=8.4012 \times 0.70 = 8.40. ✓

7. In the chapter problem, 95 cans are sold at £1.20 each and 6 boxes at £3.00 each. Work out the total taken.

Hint

Find each amount separately, then add.

Full working

95×1.20=11495 \times 1.20 = 114 and 6×3.00=186 \times 3.00 = 18, so the total taken is 114+18=£132114 + 18 = £132.
