GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

Chapter 10: Review

The chapter problem, solved

Pattern A starts at 55 and adds 33 tiles each design. Its nth term is 3n+23n+2. Pattern B starts at 22 and doubles each design. Its term at position nn is 2n2^n.

Compare the totals:

n=1:A=5,B=2n=1: A=5,\quad B=2 n=2:A=8,B=4n=2: A=8,\quad B=4 n=3:A=11,B=8n=3: A=11,\quad B=8 n=4:A=14,B=16n=4: A=14,\quad B=16

Pattern B first has more tiles at design 44. For design 55, Pattern A has 1717 tiles and Pattern B has 3232.

Mixed practice: choose a method and explain why

For each question, name the type of rule or calculation you will use before working it out.

  1. Continue the sequence 3,8,13,18,…3,8,13,18,\ldots by two terms.
  2. Find the 20th term of the sequence with nth term 5n−25n-2.
  3. Is 6464 a square number, a cube number, both, or neither?
  4. Write the next two triangular numbers after 1515.
  5. Find the nth term of 9,13,17,21,…9,13,17,21,\ldots.
  6. Find the nth term of 1,4,9,16,25,…1,4,9,16,25,\ldots.
  7. Continue 2,6,18,54,…2,6,18,54,\ldots by one term.
  8. Work out 0.750.75 of 240240.
  9. Solve 4x+7=314x+7=31.
  10. A sequence begins 12,7,2,−3,…12,7,2,-3,\ldots. State its common difference and find its 10th term.
Answers
  1. Add 5 each time: 23,2823,28.
  2. Linear rule: 5(20)−2=985(20)-2=98.
  3. Both: 64=82=4364=8^2=4^3.
  4. Add 6, then 7: 21,2821,28.
  5. Common difference 4, so begin with 4n4n. Add 5 to match term 1: 4n+54n+5.
  6. Square numbers, so the nth term is n2n^2.
  7. Multiply by 3: 162162.
  8. 0.75×240=1800.75\times240=180.
  9. 4x=244x=24, so x=6x=6.
  10. Common difference −5-5. The 10th term is 12+9(−5)=−3312+9(-5)=-33.

What you can now do

Return to your connection

Return to the pattern you described at the chapter start. Can you write a rule for it now? Explain what the position number would mean in your example.
