8.5 Integration by substitution and by parts — Practise with help

Work each question closed book first. For a substitution, write uu and dudu before you change the integral. For parts, write uu and dvdx\dfrac{dv}{dx}.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Differentiate y=(x2+1)4y = (x^2 + 1)^4.
  2. Differentiate y=xe2xy = xe^{2x}.
  3. Find ∫e3xdx\displaystyle\int e^{3x}dx.
Answers
  1. dydx=4(x2+1)3×2x=8x(x2+1)3\dfrac{dy}{dx} = 4(x^2 + 1)^3 \times 2x = 8x(x^2 + 1)^3.
  2. dydx=e2x+2xe2x=e2x(1+2x)\dfrac{dy}{dx} = e^{2x} + 2xe^{2x} = e^{2x}(1 + 2x).
  3. 13e3x+C\dfrac{1}{3}e^{3x} + C.

If question 1 was hard, revise the chain rule in Section 7.7.

Practise with help

1. Find ∫2x(x2+1)4dx\displaystyle\int 2x(x^2 + 1)^4dx.

Hint

Let u=x2+1u = x^2 + 1. What is dudu? Look for 2xdx2xdx in the integral.

Next step

With u=x2+1u = x^2 + 1, du=2xdxdu = 2xdx. The integral becomes ∫u4du\displaystyle\int u^4du.

Full working ∫u4du=u55+C.\int u^4du = \frac{u^5}{5} + C.

Substitute back:

∫2x(x2+1)4dx=(x2+1)55+C.\int 2x(x^2 + 1)^4dx = \frac{(x^2 + 1)^5}{5} + C.

Check by differentiating the answer with the chain rule.

2. Find ∫3x2ex3dx\displaystyle\int 3x^2e^{x^3}dx.

Hint

The derivative of x3x^3 is 3x23x^2, which appears in the integral. Let u=x3u = x^3.

Next step

du=3x2dxdu = 3x^2dx, so the integral becomes ∫eudu\displaystyle\int e^udu.

Full working ∫eudu=eu+C=ex3+C.\int e^udu = e^u + C = e^{x^3} + C.

The substitution removes the 3x23x^2 and leaves the standard exponential integral.

3. Find ∫2xx2+1dx\displaystyle\int \frac{2x}{x^2 + 1}dx.

Hint

Let u=x2+1u = x^2 + 1. The top is the derivative of the bottom, which points to a logarithm.

Next step

du=2xdxdu = 2xdx, so the integral becomes ∫1udu\displaystyle\int \frac{1}{u}du.

Full working ∫1udu=ln⁡u+C=ln⁡(x2+1)+C.\int \frac{1}{u}du = \ln u + C = \ln(x^2 + 1) + C.

The quadratic is always positive, so the logarithm is defined for every xx.

4. Find ∫xe2xdx\displaystyle\int xe^{2x}dx using integration by parts.

Hint

Take u=xu = x, so that differentiating removes the xx. Take dvdx=e2x\dfrac{dv}{dx} = e^{2x}.

Next step

dudx=1\dfrac{du}{dx} = 1 and v=12e2xv = \dfrac{1}{2}e^{2x}. Write uv−∫vdudxdxuv - \displaystyle\int v\frac{du}{dx}dx.

Full working ∫xe2xdx=x×12e2x−∫12e2xdx=12xe2x−14e2x+C=e2x(2x−1)4+C.\int xe^{2x}dx = x \times \frac{1}{2}e^{2x} - \int \frac{1}{2}e^{2x}dx = \frac{1}{2}xe^{2x} - \frac{1}{4}e^{2x} + C = \frac{e^{2x}(2x - 1)}{4} + C.

The second integral is simpler than the first because the xx is gone.

5. Find ∫xcos⁡xdx\displaystyle\int x\cos xdx using integration by parts.

Hint

Take u=xu = x and dvdx=cos⁡x\dfrac{dv}{dx} = \cos x. The integral of cosine is sine.

Next step

dudx=1\dfrac{du}{dx} = 1 and v=sin⁡xv = \sin x. Write uv−∫vduuv - \displaystyle\int vdu.

Full working ∫xcos⁡xdx=xsin⁡x−∫sin⁡xdx=xsin⁡x+cos⁡x+C.\int x\cos xdx = x\sin x - \int \sin xdx = x\sin x + \cos x + C.

The minus sign in the formula turns −sin⁡x-\sin x into +cos⁡x+\cos x after integration.

6. Find ∫x2exdx\displaystyle\int x^2e^xdx.

Hint

Apply integration by parts with u=x2u = x^2. The new integral still contains xx, so parts is needed a second time.

Next step

With u=x2u = x^2 and v=exv = e^x, ∫x2exdx=x2ex−2∫xexdx\displaystyle\int x^2e^xdx = x^2e^x - 2\int xe^xdx. Now find ∫xexdx\displaystyle\int xe^xdx.

Full working

The second integral is

∫xexdx=xex−∫exdx=xex−ex.\int xe^xdx = xe^x - \int e^xdx = xe^x - e^x.

Substitute this back:

∫x2exdx=x2ex−2(xex−ex)+C=ex(x2−2x+2)+C.\int x^2e^xdx = x^2e^x - 2\left(xe^x - e^x\right) + C = e^x\left(x^2 - 2x + 2\right) + C.

Apply parts twice whenever the power of xx is greater than one.
