3.3 The equation of a circle and its properties — Practise
Work through these on your own. For an expanded equation, complete the square before you do anything else: the centre and the radius decide every later step. For a tangent, remember that the radius meets it at a right angle. Later items reach back to gradients and simultaneous equations from Chapter 2, so decide which tool each one needs before you start.
Both the questions and the answers below come from a set that is checked by computer every time the book is built.

Answers and concise solutions
1. The equation
Answer: Substitute the centre and the radius into : . Expanding gives , so . The expanded form is the same circle, written differently.
2. The centre and the radius
Answer: Complete the square twice: , so . The centre is and the radius is . The centre is and the radius satisfies .
3. The centre and the radius
Answer: Complete the square: , so . The centre is and the radius is . The signs matter: means the centre coordinate is , not .
4. The decision
Answer: Substitute the point: . Since , the point is inside the circle. The distance from the centre is , which is less than the radius .
5. The equation
Answer: The radius is the distance from the centre to the point: , so . The equation is . Working with first avoids a square root, and the square root is only needed if the question asks for the radius itself.
6. The tangent and the distance check
Answer: The radius from to has gradient , so the tangent has gradient : , which is . The point satisfies the line, since . The distance from the centre to the line is , which equals the radius. A line at the radius from the centre touches the circle once, so it is a tangent.
7. The two points
Answer: Substitute : , so and or . The two points are and . The line meets the circle twice, so it is a secant, and the chord is units long.
8. The two points
Answer: Substitute : , so and . Then or , giving and . Two distinct real roots mean the line cuts the circle twice.
9. The chord length
Answer: The chord length is the distance between the endpoints: , about . The exact surd is the answer; a rounded decimal is not.
10. The midpoint and the perpendicular
Answer: The midpoint is . The chord has gradient , so the perpendicular from the centre has gradient : . Substituting the midpoint gives , which is true. So the perpendicular from the centre meets the chord at its midpoint and bisects it.
11. The gradient product
Answer: The gradient of is and the gradient of is . Their product is , so the two lines meet at a right angle. is a diameter because it joins and through the centre, so this is the angle in a semicircle.
12. The distance and the conclusion
Answer: Write the line as . The centre is , so the distance is . The radius is also , since . The distance equals the radius, so the line touches the circle at exactly one point and is a tangent.
13. The decision and the discriminant
Answer: Substitute : , so . The discriminant is , which is negative. A negative discriminant means no real roots, so the line misses the circle. This matches the distance check: the distance from to is , which is greater than the radius .
