7.7 The product, quotient and chain rules — Practise

Work through these on your own. For each expression, name the rule you need before you start, then write the parts uu and vv (or the inside function).

Both the questions and the answers below come from a set that is checked by computer every time the book is built.

  1. Differentiate y=x2sin⁡xy = x^2\sin x.
  2. Differentiate y=xcos⁡xy = x\cos x.
  3. Differentiate y=xe3xy = xe^{3x}.
  4. Differentiate y=xx−2y = \dfrac{x}{x - 2}.
  5. Differentiate y=sin⁡xxy = \dfrac{\sin x}{x}.
  6. Differentiate y=e2xxy = \dfrac{e^{2x}}{x}.
  7. Differentiate y=(3x+1)5y = (3x + 1)^5.

Answers and concise solutions

1. The derivative

Answer: Product rule with u=x2u = x^2 and v=sin⁡xv = \sin x: u′v+uv′=2xsin⁡x+x2cos⁡xu'v + uv' = 2x\sin x + x^2\cos x.

2. The derivative

Answer: Product rule with u=xu = x and v=cos⁡xv = \cos x: 1cos⁡x+x(−sin⁡x)=cos⁡x−xsin⁡x1\cos x + x(-\sin x) = \cos x - x\sin x.

3. The derivative

Answer: Product rule: 1e3x+x(3e3x)=e3x(3x+1)1e^{3x} + x(3e^{3x}) = e^{3x}(3x + 1) after taking out the common factor.

4. The derivative

Answer: Quotient rule with u=xu = x and v=x−2v = x - 2: (x−2)(1)−x(1)(x−2)2=−2(x−2)2\dfrac{(x - 2)(1) - x(1)}{(x - 2)^2} = \dfrac{-2}{(x - 2)^2}.

5. The derivative

Answer: Quotient rule with u=sin⁡xu = \sin x and v=xv = x: xcos⁡x−sin⁡xx2\dfrac{x\cos x - \sin x}{x^2}. The order in the numerator matters.

6. The derivative

Answer: Quotient rule with u=e2xu = e^{2x} and v=xv = x: 2xe2x−e2xx2=e2x(2x−1)x2\dfrac{2xe^{2x} - e^{2x}}{x^2} = \dfrac{e^{2x}(2x - 1)}{x^2}.

7. The derivative

Answer: Chain rule: the outside gives 5(3x+1)45(3x + 1)^4 and the inside gives 33. Their product is 15(3x+1)415(3x + 1)^4.

8. The derivative

Answer: Chain rule: the derivative of sine is cosine, and the inside x3x^3 differentiates to 3x23x^2.

9. The derivative

Answer: Chain rule: the exponential stays the same, and the inside x2x^2 contributes 2x2x. So dydx=2xex2\dfrac{dy}{dx} = 2xe^{x^2}.

10. The derivative

Answer: Chain rule: 14x+3×4=44x+3\dfrac{1}{4x + 3} \times 4 = \dfrac{4}{4x + 3}.

11. The derivative

Answer: Product rule with u=x2u = x^2 and v=ln⁡xv = \ln x: 2xln⁡x+x2×1x=2xln⁡x+x2x\ln x + x^2 \times \dfrac{1}{x} = 2x\ln x + x.

12. The derivative

Answer: Quotient rule: 3(x+2)−(3x+1)(x+2)2=5(x+2)2\dfrac{3(x + 2) - (3x + 1)}{(x + 2)^2} = \dfrac{5}{(x + 2)^2}.
