5.6 Secant, cosecant, cotangent and the inverse trigonometric functions — Practise with help

Write each new function as a fraction before you calculate. Then the reciprocal and the domain are both visible.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Work out the reciprocal of 45\dfrac{4}{5} and of 34\dfrac{3}{4}.
  2. Use sin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1 to find sin⁡θ\sin\theta when cos⁡θ=513\cos\theta = \dfrac{5}{13} and θ\theta is acute.
  3. Write down the value of cos⁡π3\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3}.
Answers
  1. The reciprocals are 54\dfrac{5}{4} and 43\dfrac{4}{3}.
  2. sin⁡2θ=1−25169=144169\sin^2\theta = 1 - \dfrac{25}{169} = \dfrac{144}{169}, so sin⁡θ=1213\sin\theta = \dfrac{12}{13}.
  3. cos⁡π3=12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{1}{2}.

If question 1 was hard, revise reciprocals before you continue.

Practise with help

1. Write down the value of sec⁡π3\sec\dfrac{\pi}{3}.

Hint

Secant is the reciprocal of cosine.

Next step

cos⁡π3=12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{1}{2}, so take its reciprocal.

Full working sec⁡π3=1cos⁡π3=112=2.\sec\frac{\pi}{3} = \frac{1}{\cos\frac{\pi}{3}} = \frac{1}{\frac{1}{2}} = 2.

2. Write down the value of cosec⁡π6\operatorname{cosec}\dfrac{\pi}{6}.

Hint

Cosecant is the reciprocal of sine.

Next step

sin⁡π6=12\sin\dfrac{\pi}{6} = \dfrac{1}{2}, so take its reciprocal.

Full working cosec⁡π6=1sin⁡π6=112=2.\operatorname{cosec}\frac{\pi}{6} = \frac{1}{\sin\frac{\pi}{6}} = \frac{1}{\frac{1}{2}} = 2.

3. Write down the value of cot⁡π4\cot\dfrac{\pi}{4}.

Hint

cot⁡θ=cos⁡θsin⁡θ\cot\theta = \dfrac{\cos\theta}{\sin\theta}.

Next step

Both cos⁡π4\cos\dfrac{\pi}{4} and sin⁡π4\sin\dfrac{\pi}{4} equal 22\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}. Divide them.

Full working cot⁡π4=cos⁡π4sin⁡π4=2222=1.\cot\frac{\pi}{4} = \frac{\cos\frac{\pi}{4}}{\sin\frac{\pi}{4}} = \frac{\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}}{\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}} = 1.

4. Simplify cosec⁡2θ−cot⁡2θ\operatorname{cosec}^2\theta - \cot^2\theta.

Hint

Use the identity 1+cot⁡2θ=cosec⁡2θ1 + \cot^2\theta = \operatorname{cosec}^2\theta.

Next step

Replace cosec⁡2θ\operatorname{cosec}^2\theta with 1+cot⁡2θ1 + \cot^2\theta, then subtract cot⁡2θ\cot^2\theta.

Full working cosec⁡2θ−cot⁡2θ=(1+cot⁡2θ)−cot⁡2θ=1.\operatorname{cosec}^2\theta - \cot^2\theta = (1 + \cot^2\theta) - \cot^2\theta = 1.

5. Given that cos⁡θ=513\cos\theta = \dfrac{5}{13} and θ\theta is acute, find sec⁡θ\sec\theta and cosec⁡θ\operatorname{cosec}\theta.

Hint

Secant is immediate. For cosecant, find sine first with sin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1.

Next step

sec⁡θ=135\sec\theta = \dfrac{13}{5}. Also sin⁡2θ=1−25169=144169\sin^2\theta = 1 - \dfrac{25}{169} = \dfrac{144}{169}, so sin⁡θ=1213\sin\theta = \dfrac{12}{13}.

Full working sec⁡θ=1cos⁡θ=135.\sec\theta = \frac{1}{\cos\theta} = \frac{13}{5}. cosec⁡θ=1sin⁡θ=1312.\operatorname{cosec}\theta = \frac{1}{\sin\theta} = \frac{13}{12}.

6. Work out arcsin⁡32\arcsin\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2} in radians, giving the principal value.

Hint

Ask which angle in the principal range has a sine of 32\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}.

Next step

The principal range of arcsine is [−π2,π2]\left[-\dfrac{\pi}{2}, \dfrac{\pi}{2}\right]. Find the angle in that range whose sine is 32\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}.

Full working arcsin⁡32=π3.\arcsin\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} = \frac{\pi}{3}.

This is 60∘60^\circ, and it lies inside the principal range.
