5.4 Exact trigonometric values — Practise

Work through these on your own. Give every answer in exact form, with a rational denominator where one is needed. Say which quadrant the angle is in before you choose the sign.

Both the questions and the answers below come from a set that is checked by computer every time the book is built.

  1. Write down the exact value of sin⁡60∘\sin 60^\circ.
  2. Write down the exact value of tan⁡30∘\tan 30^\circ, with a rational denominator.
  3. Find the exact value of sin⁡2π3\sin\dfrac{2\pi}{3}.
  4. Find the exact value of cos⁡5π4\cos\dfrac{5\pi}{4}.
  5. Find the exact value of tan⁡5π6\tan\dfrac{5\pi}{6}.
  6. Find the exact value of sin⁡7π6+cos⁡π3\sin\dfrac{7\pi}{6} + \cos\dfrac{\pi}{3}.
  7. Find the exact value of cos⁡2π3\cos\dfrac{2\pi}{3}.
  8. Find the exact value of sin⁡π4cos⁡π4\sin\dfrac{\pi}{4}\cos\dfrac{\pi}{4}.
  9. Find the exact value of sin⁡π4+cos⁡π4\sin\dfrac{\pi}{4} + \cos\dfrac{\pi}{4}.
  10. Find the exact value of tan⁡π3\tan\dfrac{\pi}{3}.
Answers and concise solutions

1. The value

Answer: From the half-equilateral triangle with sides 11, 3\sqrt{3} and 22, the side opposite 60∘60^\circ is 3\sqrt{3} and the hypotenuse is 22. So sin⁡60∘=32\sin 60^\circ = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}.

2. The value

Answer: From the half-equilateral triangle, tan⁡30∘=13\tan 30^\circ = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}}. Rationalising gives 13×33=33\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}} \times \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{\sqrt{3}} = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{3}.

3. The value

Answer: 2π3\dfrac{2\pi}{3} is 120∘120^\circ, in the second quadrant where sine is positive. The related acute angle is π3\dfrac{\pi}{3}, so sin⁡2π3=sin⁡π3=32\sin\dfrac{2\pi}{3} = \sin\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}.

4. The value

Answer: 5π4\dfrac{5\pi}{4} is 225∘225^\circ, in the third quadrant where cosine is negative. The related acute angle is π4\dfrac{\pi}{4}, so cos⁡5π4=−cos⁡π4=−22\cos\dfrac{5\pi}{4} = -\cos\dfrac{\pi}{4} = -\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}.

5. The value

Answer: 5π6\dfrac{5\pi}{6} is 150∘150^\circ, in the second quadrant where tangent is negative. The related acute angle is π6\dfrac{\pi}{6}, so tan⁡5π6=−tan⁡π6=−33\tan\dfrac{5\pi}{6} = -\tan\dfrac{\pi}{6} = -\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{3}.

6. The value

Answer: 7π6\dfrac{7\pi}{6} is 210∘210^\circ, in the third quadrant, so sin⁡7π6=−12\sin\dfrac{7\pi}{6} = -\dfrac{1}{2}. Also cos⁡π3=12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{1}{2}. The sum is −12+12=0-\dfrac{1}{2} + \dfrac{1}{2} = 0.

7. The value

Answer: 2π3\dfrac{2\pi}{3} is 120∘120^\circ, in the second quadrant where cosine is negative. The related acute angle is π3\dfrac{\pi}{3}, so cos⁡2π3=−12\cos\dfrac{2\pi}{3} = -\dfrac{1}{2}.

8. The value

Answer: Both factors equal 22\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}, so their product is 22×22=24=12\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2} \times \dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2} = \dfrac{2}{4} = \dfrac{1}{2}.

9. The value

Answer: Each term is 22\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}, so the sum is 2×22=22 \times \dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2} = \sqrt{2}.

10. The value

Answer: From the half-equilateral triangle, the side opposite 60∘60^\circ is 3\sqrt{3} and the side next to it is 11, so tan⁡60∘=3\tan 60^\circ = \sqrt{3}.
