5.9 The forms r cos(theta +/- alpha) and r sin(theta +/- alpha) — Practise with help

Work out RR first. Then find the quadrant of α\alpha from the signs of the two coefficients. Then solve or state the range.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Work out 32+42\sqrt{3^2 + 4^2}.
  2. Work out arctan⁡1\arctan 1 in radians.
  3. Write down the value of cos⁡0\cos 0.
Answers
  1. 9+16=25=5\sqrt{9 + 16} = \sqrt{25} = 5.
  2. arctan⁡1=π4\arctan 1 = \dfrac{\pi}{4}.
  3. cos⁡0=1\cos 0 = 1.

If question 1 was hard, revise Pythagoras before you continue.

Practise with help

1. Write 3cos⁡θ+4sin⁡θ3\cos\theta + 4\sin\theta in the form Rcos⁡(θ−α)R\cos(\theta - \alpha), with α\alpha acute, and state the greatest value.

Hint

R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2} with a=3a = 3 and b=4b = 4. Then tan⁡α=ba\tan\alpha = \dfrac{b}{a}.

Next step

R=9+16=5R = \sqrt{9 + 16} = 5 and tan⁡α=43\tan\alpha = \dfrac{4}{3}, so α≈0.9273\alpha \approx 0.9273. The greatest value is RR.

Full working 3cos⁡θ+4sin⁡θ=5cos⁡(θ−0.9273).3\cos\theta + 4\sin\theta = 5\cos(\theta - 0.9273).

The greatest value is 55, reached when θ=0.9273\theta = 0.9273.

2. Write 5cos⁡θ−12sin⁡θ5\cos\theta - 12\sin\theta in the form Rcos⁡(θ−α)R\cos(\theta - \alpha), and state the greatest value.

Hint

Here a=5a = 5 and b=−12b = -12. The negative bb puts α\alpha in the fourth quadrant.

Next step

R=25+144=13R = \sqrt{25 + 144} = 13. Also tan⁡α=−125\tan\alpha = \dfrac{-12}{5}, so the related acute angle is about 1.1761.176 and α≈−1.176\alpha \approx -1.176.

Full working 5cos⁡θ−12sin⁡θ=13cos⁡(θ+1.176).5\cos\theta - 12\sin\theta = 13\cos(\theta + 1.176).

The greatest value is 1313.

3. Write −cos⁡θ+3sin⁡θ-\cos\theta + \sqrt{3}\sin\theta in the form Rcos⁡(θ−α)R\cos(\theta - \alpha), in exact form.

Hint

a=−1a = -1, so cosine is negative, and b=3b = \sqrt{3} is positive. That puts α\alpha in the second quadrant.

Next step

R=2R = 2. The related acute angle is arctan⁡3=π3\arctan\sqrt{3} = \dfrac{\pi}{3}, so α=π−π3\alpha = \pi - \dfrac{\pi}{3}.

Full working −cos⁡θ+3sin⁡θ=2cos⁡(θ−2π3).-\cos\theta + \sqrt{3}\sin\theta = 2\cos\left(\theta - \frac{2\pi}{3}\right).

4. Solve 3cos⁡θ+4sin⁡θ=23\cos\theta + 4\sin\theta = 2 for 0≤θ<2π0 \le \theta < 2\pi.

Hint

Replace the left-hand side with 5cos⁡(θ−0.9273)5\cos(\theta - 0.9273) from question 1.

Next step

cos⁡(θ−0.9273)=0.4\cos(\theta - 0.9273) = 0.4. The principal value is 1.15931.1593 radians, and cosine is positive at the negative of that value as well.

Full working θ−0.9273=1.1593orθ−0.9273=−1.1593.\theta - 0.9273 = 1.1593 \quad \text{or} \quad \theta - 0.9273 = -1.1593. θ=2.0866orθ=−0.2320.\theta = 2.0866 \quad \text{or} \quad \theta = -0.2320.

The second is outside the interval, so add 2π2\pi to get θ=6.0512\theta = 6.0512. The solutions are θ≈2.087\theta \approx 2.087 and θ≈6.051\theta \approx 6.051.

5. The height of the tide is h=12cos⁡θ+5sin⁡θh = 12\cos\theta + 5\sin\theta metres. Find the greatest height.

Hint

The greatest height is R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}.

Next step

R=144+25=169R = \sqrt{144 + 25} = \sqrt{169}.

Full working R=144+25=13.R = \sqrt{144 + 25} = 13.

The greatest height is 1313 m. The tide is never as high as 12+5=1712 + 5 = 17 m, because the two waves do not peak at the same angle.

6. Write 4sin⁡θ+3cos⁡θ4\sin\theta + 3\cos\theta in the form Rsin⁡(θ+β)R\sin(\theta + \beta), with β\beta acute.

Hint

For the sine form, sin⁡β=aR\sin\beta = \dfrac{a}{R} and cos⁡β=bR\cos\beta = \dfrac{b}{R}, where aa is the cosine coefficient and bb the sine coefficient.

Next step

R=5R = 5. Here the cosine coefficient is 33 and the sine coefficient is 44, so sin⁡β=35\sin\beta = \dfrac{3}{5} and cos⁡β=45\cos\beta = \dfrac{4}{5}.

Full working 4sin⁡θ+3cos⁡θ=5sin⁡(θ+β),4\sin\theta + 3\cos\theta = 5\sin(\theta + \beta),

where β≈0.6435\beta \approx 0.6435 radians, because sin⁡β=35\sin\beta = \dfrac{3}{5}.
