10.2 Magnitude and direction; component and magnitude/direction form — Practise with help

Work each one first, closed book. Before you find a direction, decide which quadrant the vector is in. Before you find a magnitude, write down the squares.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Work out cos⁡60∘\cos 60^\circ and sin⁡60∘\sin 60^\circ.
  2. Work out tan⁡−1(1)\tan^{-1}(1) in degrees.
  3. Work out 52+122\sqrt{5^2 + 12^2}.
Answers
  1. cos⁡60∘=12\cos 60^\circ = \dfrac{1}{2} and sin⁡60∘=32\sin 60^\circ = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}.
  2. tan⁡45∘=1\tan 45^\circ = 1, so tan⁡−1(1)=45∘\tan^{-1}(1) = 45^\circ.
  3. 25+144=169=13\sqrt{25 + 144} = \sqrt{169} = 13.

If question 1 was hard, revise the exact trigonometric values before you continue.

Practise with help

1. Find the magnitude of a=5i+12j\mathbf{a} = 5\mathbf{i} + 12\mathbf{j}.

Hint

The magnitude is the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle whose two shorter sides are the components.

Next step

Square each component, add the two squares, then take the square root.

Full working ∣a∣=52+122=25+144=169=13.|\mathbf{a}| = \sqrt{5^2 + 12^2} = \sqrt{25 + 144} = \sqrt{169} = 13.

The vector has length 1313.

2. Find the magnitude of b=−8i+6j\mathbf{b} = -8\mathbf{i} + 6\mathbf{j}.

Hint

The negative sign belongs to a direction, not to a length. Squaring removes it.

Next step

Use (−8)2=64(-8)^2 = 64 and 62=366^2 = 36.

Full working ∣b∣=(−8)2+62=64+36=100=10.|\mathbf{b}| = \sqrt{(-8)^2 + 6^2} = \sqrt{64 + 36} = \sqrt{100} = 10.

The magnitude is 1010.

3. Find the magnitude of c=2i−3j+6k\mathbf{c} = 2\mathbf{i} - 3\mathbf{j} + 6\mathbf{k}.

Hint

In three dimensions there are three squares to add before the square root.

Next step

Work out 22+(−3)2+622^2 + (-3)^2 + 6^2.

Full working ∣c∣=22+(−3)2+62=4+9+36=49=7.|\mathbf{c}| = \sqrt{2^2 + (-3)^2 + 6^2} = \sqrt{4 + 9 + 36} = \sqrt{49} = 7.

The magnitude is 77.

4. Find the direction of a=i+j\mathbf{a} = \mathbf{i} + \mathbf{j} as an angle from the positive xx-axis.

Hint

Both components are equal, so the vector lies on a familiar line through the origin.

Next step

tan⁡θ=11=1\tan\theta = \dfrac{1}{1} = 1.

Full working

Both components are positive, so the vector is in the first quadrant. tan⁡−1(1)=45∘\tan^{-1}(1) = 45^\circ, so the direction is 45∘45^\circ from the positive xx-axis.

5. Find the direction of c=−i+j\mathbf{c} = -\mathbf{i} + \mathbf{j} as an angle from the positive xx-axis.

Hint

The xx-component is negative and the yy-component is positive. Sketch it to choose the quadrant.

Next step

The inverse tangent gives 45∘45^\circ to the negative xx-axis. Subtract it from 180∘180^\circ.

Full working

The vector is in the second quadrant. Its angle to the negative xx-axis is tan⁡−1(1)=45∘\tan^{-1}(1) = 45^\circ, so its direction from the positive xx-axis is

180∘−45∘=135∘.180^\circ - 45^\circ = 135^\circ.

6. Find the direction of d=−3j\mathbf{d} = -3\mathbf{j} as an angle from the positive xx-axis.

Hint

The xx-component is 00, so the formula for tan⁡θ\tan\theta divides by zero. Draw the vector instead.

Next step

The vector points straight down, which is 90∘90^\circ clockwise from the positive xx-axis.

Full working

The vector points straight downwards. As an anticlockwise angle from the positive xx-axis, that is 270∘270^\circ. It can also be written as −90∘-90^\circ. Both name the same direction.

7. A force of 2525 N acts at 40∘40^\circ above the horizontal. Write the force in component form, correct to 33 significant figures.

Hint

The horizontal component uses cosine and the vertical component uses sine.

Next step

Work out 25cos⁡40∘25\cos 40^\circ and 25sin⁡40∘25\sin 40^\circ.

Full working Fx=25cos⁡40∘=19.2 N,Fy=25sin⁡40∘=16.1 N.F_x = 25\cos 40^\circ = 19.2 \text{ N}, \qquad F_y = 25\sin 40^\circ = 16.1 \text{ N}.

The force is 19.2i+16.1j19.2\mathbf{i} + 16.1\mathbf{j} N.

8. A walker walks 1515 km on a bearing of 060∘060^\circ. Find the displacement from the start, with east as i\mathbf{i} and north as j\mathbf{j}, giving an exact answer.

Hint

A bearing is measured clockwise from north. The east component uses sine and the north component uses cosine.

Next step

Work out 15sin⁡60∘15\sin 60^\circ and 15cos⁡60∘15\cos 60^\circ with exact values.

Full working east=15sin⁡60∘=15×32=1532,north=15cos⁡60∘=15×12=152.\text{east} = 15\sin 60^\circ = 15 \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} = \frac{15\sqrt{3}}{2}, \qquad \text{north} = 15\cos 60^\circ = 15 \times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{15}{2}.

The displacement is 1532i+152j\dfrac{15\sqrt{3}}{2}\mathbf{i} + \dfrac{15}{2}\mathbf{j} km. Both components are positive, so the walker finishes north-east of the start.

9. Find the unit vector in the direction of a=5i+12j\mathbf{a} = 5\mathbf{i} + 12\mathbf{j}.

Hint

A unit vector has magnitude 11. Divide the vector by its own magnitude.

Next step

Question 1 gives ∣a∣=13|\mathbf{a}| = 13. Divide each component by 1313.

Full working a^=113(5i+12j)=513i+1213j.\hat{\mathbf{a}} = \frac{1}{13}(5\mathbf{i} + 12\mathbf{j}) = \frac{5}{13}\mathbf{i} + \frac{12}{13}\mathbf{j}.

Check: (5/13)2+(12/13)2=25/169+144/169=1\sqrt{(5/13)^2 + (12/13)^2} = \sqrt{25/169 + 144/169} = 1, so the unit vector has magnitude 11.
