5.6 Secant, cosecant, cotangent and the inverse trigonometric functions — Practise

Work through these on your own. Give every value in exact form. For an inverse function, state the principal value, and give the angle in radians unless the question asks for degrees.

Both the questions and the answers below come from a set that is checked by computer every time the book is built.

  1. Write down the value of sec⁡π3\sec\dfrac{\pi}{3}.
  2. Write down the value of cosec⁡π6\operatorname{cosec}\dfrac{\pi}{6}.
  3. Write down the value of cot⁡π4\cot\dfrac{\pi}{4}.
  4. Simplify cosec⁡2θ−cot⁡2θ\operatorname{cosec}^2\theta - \cot^2\theta.
  5. Simplify sec⁡2θ−tan⁡2θ\sec^2\theta - \tan^2\theta.
  6. Given that cos⁡θ=513\cos\theta = \dfrac{5}{13} and θ\theta is acute, find sin⁡θ\sin\theta and cosec⁡θ\operatorname{cosec}\theta.
  7. Work out arcsin⁡32\arcsin\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}, giving the principal value in radians.
  8. Work out arccos⁡12\arccos\dfrac{1}{2}, giving the principal value in radians.
  9. Work out arctan⁡1\arctan 1, giving the principal value in radians.
  10. Given that sec⁡θ=53\sec\theta = \dfrac{5}{3} and θ\theta is acute, find tan⁡θ\tan\theta.
Answers and concise solutions

1. The value

Answer: sec⁡π3=1cos⁡π3=112=2\sec\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{1}{\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3}} = \dfrac{1}{\frac{1}{2}} = 2.

2. The value

Answer: cosec⁡π6=1sin⁡π6=112=2\operatorname{cosec}\dfrac{\pi}{6} = \dfrac{1}{\sin\dfrac{\pi}{6}} = \dfrac{1}{\frac{1}{2}} = 2.

3. The value

Answer: cot⁡π4=cos⁡π4sin⁡π4=2222=1\cot\dfrac{\pi}{4} = \dfrac{\cos\dfrac{\pi}{4}}{\sin\dfrac{\pi}{4}} = \dfrac{\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}}{\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}} = 1.

4. The simplified expression

Answer: From 1+cot⁡2θ=cosec⁡2θ1 + \cot^2\theta = \operatorname{cosec}^2\theta, subtract cot⁡2θ\cot^2\theta from both sides. The result is cosec⁡2θ−cot⁡2θ=1\operatorname{cosec}^2\theta - \cot^2\theta = 1.

5. The simplified expression

Answer: From sec⁡2θ=1+tan⁡2θ\sec^2\theta = 1 + \tan^2\theta, subtract tan⁡2θ\tan^2\theta from both sides. The result is sec⁡2θ−tan⁡2θ=1\sec^2\theta - \tan^2\theta = 1.

6. The two values

Answer: sin⁡2θ=1−25169=144169\sin^2\theta = 1 - \dfrac{25}{169} = \dfrac{144}{169}. Since θ\theta is acute, sin⁡θ=1213\sin\theta = \dfrac{12}{13}. Then cosec⁡θ=1312\operatorname{cosec}\theta = \dfrac{13}{12}.

7. The principal value

Answer: The principal range of arcsine is [−π2,π2]\left[-\dfrac{\pi}{2}, \dfrac{\pi}{2}\right]. Inside it, sin⁡π3=32\sin\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}, so arcsin⁡32=π3\arcsin\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2} = \dfrac{\pi}{3}.

8. The principal value

Answer: The principal range of arccosine is [0,π][0, \pi]. Inside it, cos⁡π3=12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{1}{2}, so arccos⁡12=π3\arccos\dfrac{1}{2} = \dfrac{\pi}{3}.

9. The principal value

Answer: The principal range of arctangent is (−π2,π2)\left(-\dfrac{\pi}{2}, \dfrac{\pi}{2}\right). Inside it, tan⁡π4=1\tan\dfrac{\pi}{4} = 1, so arctan⁡1=π4\arctan 1 = \dfrac{\pi}{4}.

10. The value

Answer: Use sec⁡2θ=1+tan⁡2θ\sec^2\theta = 1 + \tan^2\theta. Then tan⁡2θ=259−1=169\tan^2\theta = \dfrac{25}{9} - 1 = \dfrac{16}{9}, so tan⁡θ=43\tan\theta = \dfrac{4}{3} because θ\theta is acute.
