3.1 Straight lines, gradients and straight-line models — Practise with help

Work each one first, closed book. Decide whether the question gives you a gradient, a point, or both, before you write anything down.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Rearrange 3x+2y=123x + 2y = 12 to make yy the subject.
  2. Work out the value of 11−57−2\dfrac{11 - 5}{7 - 2}.
  3. Solve 2x−1=92x - 1 = 9.
Answers
  1. Subtract 3x3x from both sides: 2y=12−3x2y = 12 - 3x. Divide by 22: y=6−32xy = 6 - \dfrac{3}{2}x.
  2. 65\dfrac{6}{5}.
  3. Add 11 to both sides: 2x=102x = 10, so x=5x = 5.

If question 1 was hard, revisit rearranging a formula before you continue.

Practise with help

1. Work out the gradient of the line through (1,2)(1, 2) and (5,14)(5, 14).

Hint

The gradient is the change in yy divided by the change in xx. Take the second point's coordinates minus the first point's, on the top and on the bottom.

Next step

The change in yy is 14−2=1214 - 2 = 12. The change in xx is 5−1=45 - 1 = 4. Divide.

Full working m=14−25−1=124=3.m = \frac{14 - 2}{5 - 1} = \frac{12}{4} = 3.

The line rises 33 units for each unit across, so the gradient is 33.

2. Work out the gradient of the line through (−2,6)(-2, 6) and (3,−4)(3, -4).

Hint

Substitute carefully: the change in yy is −4−6-4 - 6, and the change in xx is 3−(−2)3 - (-2).

Next step

Work out the top and the bottom separately before you divide: −4−6=−10-4 - 6 = -10 and 3−(−2)=53 - (-2) = 5.

Full working m=−4−63−(−2)=−105=−2.m = \frac{-4 - 6}{3 - (-2)} = \frac{-10}{5} = -2.

The gradient is negative, so the line falls as it moves right.

3. Find the equation of the line through (1,5)(1, 5) with gradient 33.

Hint

Use y−y1=m(x−x1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1) with x1=1x_1 = 1, y1=5y_1 = 5 and m=3m = 3.

Next step

Write y−5=3(x−1)y - 5 = 3(x - 1), then expand the bracket on the right.

Full working y−5=3(x−1)=3x−3.y - 5 = 3(x - 1) = 3x - 3.

Add 55 to both sides:

y=3x+2.y = 3x + 2.

Check with the point (1,5)(1, 5): 3×1+2=53 \times 1 + 2 = 5. The point fits.

4. Find the equation of the line through (2,1)(2, 1) and (6,9)(6, 9).

Hint

This is two jobs. Work out the gradient first, then use one of the points.

Next step

The gradient is 9−16−2=2\dfrac{9 - 1}{6 - 2} = 2. Now put m=2m = 2 and the point (2,1)(2, 1) into y−y1=m(x−x1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1).

Full working m=9−16−2=84=2.m = \frac{9 - 1}{6 - 2} = \frac{8}{4} = 2. y−1=2(x−2)=2x−4.y - 1 = 2(x - 2) = 2x - 4.

Add 11:

y=2x−3.y = 2x - 3.

Check the other point (6,9)(6, 9): 2×6−3=92 \times 6 - 3 = 9. Both points fit.

5. A plumber charges a fixed £40 plus £25 for each hour of work. Write a model for the cost, and work out the charge for a visit of 33 hours.

Hint

Which number is paid once, whatever the time? That is the intercept. Which number is paid for each hour? That is the gradient.

Next step

Let hh be the number of hours and CC the cost in pounds. The model starts from C=40+25hC = 40 + 25h. Substitute h=3h = 3.

Full working C=40+25h.C = 40 + 25h.

The intercept 4040 is the fixed charge, paid before any work starts. The gradient 2525 is the charge for each extra hour, in pounds per hour.

For a visit of 33 hours,

C=40+25×3=40+75=115.C = 40 + 25 \times 3 = 40 + 75 = 115.

The charge is £115.

6. Write y=23x−4y = \dfrac{2}{3}x - 4 in the form ax+by+c=0ax + by + c = 0, where aa, bb and cc are whole numbers.

Hint

The fraction is the only obstacle. Multiply every term by 33 first.

Next step

Multiplying by 33 gives 3y=2x−123y = 2x - 12. Now move every term to one side so that the equation reads =0= 0.

Full working

Multiply both sides by 33:

3y=2x−12.3y = 2x - 12.

Subtract 3y3y from both sides:

0=2x−3y−12,0 = 2x - 3y - 12,

which is the same as

2x−3y−12=0.2x - 3y - 12 = 0.

So a=2a = 2, b=−3b = -3 and c=−12c = -12.

7. Find where the line 4x−3y=244x - 3y = 24 crosses each axis.

Hint

The xx-intercept is the point with y=0y = 0. The yy-intercept is the point with x=0x = 0.

Next step

Put y=0y = 0 to get 4x=244x = 24. Then put x=0x = 0 to get −3y=24-3y = 24.

Full working

Put y=0y = 0:

4x=24,x=6.4x = 24, \qquad x = 6.

Put x=0x = 0:

−3y=24,y=−8.-3y = 24, \qquad y = -8.

The line crosses the xx-axis at (6,0)(6, 0) and the yy-axis at (0,−8)(0, -8).
