Chapter 13: Other functions and graphs
The chapter problem: reading a changing signal
A sensor records a repeating signal. Its graph crosses the middle value while rising, reaches a peak, falls through the middle, reaches a low point, then repeats.
First contact: Predict what comes next. Sketch a curve or describe it. No calculation is needed yet.
By the end of this chapter
You will be able to:
- sketch cubic, reciprocal, exponential and trigonometric graphs;
- read intercepts, periods, asymptotes and intersections;
- describe translations, reflections and stretches of graphs;
- use circle equations and perpendicular gradients to find tangents.
Roadmap
- 13.1 Cubic, reciprocal and exponential graphs
- 13.2 Trigonometric graphs
- 13.3 Transformations of graphs
- 13.4 The equation of a circle and tangents
- Review
Graphs can describe signals, growth and circular paths. As you learn, notice which examples connect with your own interests.
Your turn to connect it
Where do you meet something that repeats, grows, or follows a curved path? Write one example and say which graph might describe it.
