GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

14.1 Simultaneous equations by elimination — Practise with help

Work each question first. Open a hint if you need one, then reveal the working to check your method.

Warm-up: remember

Answer these from memory. Do not look back at the section.

  1. Solve 2x+3=112x+3=11.
  2. Simplify 4y−2y4y-2y.
Check the warm-up
  1. x=4x=4.
  2. 2y2y.

If an answer differs, revisit Section 9.1 for solving equations and Section 8.2 for collecting like terms.

Practise with help

1. Solve x+y=9x+y=9 and x−y=3x-y=3.

Hint

Add the equations to remove yy.

Full working

2x=122x=12, so x=6x=6. Then y=3y=3. Check both equations.

2. Solve y=2x+1y=2x+1 and x+y=10x+y=10.

Hint

Replace yy in the second equation.

Full working

x+2x+1=10x+2x+1=10, so x=3x=3 and y=7y=7.

3. For later sections, choose an approach for y=x+2y=x+2 and y=2x−1y=2x-1.

Hint

At an intersection, the two expressions for yy are equal.

Full working

x+2=2x−1x+2=2x-1, so x=3x=3 and y=5y=5. Substitution or a graph checks the pair.
