24.4 Averages from frequency tables — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

Closed book: Work out 6×46\times4, then work out 12+15+1812+15+18.

Check your answers

6×4=246\times4=24, and 12+15+18=4512+15+18=45. If either answer differs, revisit multiplication and addition before continuing.

Question 1

Values 1 and 3 have frequencies 2 and 4. Work out the total frequency.

Hint

The total frequency is the sum of the frequency column.

Next step

Add the two frequencies: 2+42+4.

Full working

Total frequency =2+4=6=2+4=6.

Question 2

For the same values and frequencies, work out 1×21\times2 and 3×43\times4.

Hint

Multiply each value by its own frequency.

Next step

The first product is 1×2=21\times2=2.

Full working

1×2=21\times2=2 and 3×4=123\times4=12.

Question 3

Use those values and frequencies to find the mean.

Hint

Divide the total of value ×\times frequency by the total frequency.

Next step

The total of value ×\times frequency is 2+12=142+12=14, and the total frequency is 6.

Full working

Mean =14÷6=73=14\div6=\frac{7}{3}.
