Practise with help

Attempt each question first. Open the hint, then the next step, when needed.

1. A storage box measures 6 cm by 4 cm by 5 cm. Work out its volume.

Hint

A cuboid's volume is its base area multiplied by its height.

Next step

Multiply the three edge lengths: 6×4×56\times4\times5.

Full working

V=6×4×5=120 cm3V=6\times4\times5=120\text{ cm}^3.

2. A pipe is a cylinder of radius 2 cm and length 10 cm. Work out its volume in terms of π.

Hint

Use V=πr2hV=\pi r^2h for a cylinder.

Next step

Substitute r=2r=2 cm and h=10h=10 cm, then square the radius.

Full working

V=π×22×10=40π cm3V=\pi\times2^2\times10=40\pi\text{ cm}^3.

3. A cuboid measures 3 cm by 3 cm by 4 cm. Work out its surface area.

Hint

There are two faces of each of the three sizes.

Next step

Substitute into S=2(lw+lh+wh)S=2(lw+lh+wh) to get 2(3×3+3×4+3×4)2(3\times3+3\times4+3\times4).

Full working

S=2(9+12+12)=2×33=66 cm2S=2(9+12+12)=2\times33=66\text{ cm}^2.
