GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

1.4 Priority of operations and inverse operations — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

  1. Work out 52÷452 \div 4.
  2. Work out (−3)×(−8)(-3) \times (-8).
  3. Work out 9−149 - 14.
Answers
  1. 1313.
  2. 2424.
  3. −5-5.

Practise with help

1. Work out 8+3×58 + 3 \times 5.

Hint

Multiplication before addition.

Full working

3×5=153 \times 5 = 15, then 8+15=238 + 15 = 23.

2. Work out (8+3)×5(8 + 3) \times 5.

Hint

Brackets first.

Full working

8+3=118 + 3 = 11, then 11×5=5511 \times 5 = 55.

3. Work out 20−6÷220 - 6 \div 2.

Hint

Division before subtraction.

Full working

6÷2=36 \div 2 = 3, then 20−3=1720 - 3 = 17.

4. Work out 5+235 + 2^3.

Hint

Index first: 23=2×2×22^3 = 2 \times 2 \times 2.

Full working

23=82^3 = 8, then 5+8=135 + 8 = 13.

5. Work out 18÷3+4×218 \div 3 + 4 \times 2.

Hint

Do the division and the multiplication, then add.

Full working

18÷3=618 \div 3 = 6 and 4×2=84 \times 2 = 8, so 6+8=146 + 8 = 14.

6. Work out 24÷4×324 \div 4 \times 3. Be careful — work left to right.

Hint

Division and multiplication have equal priority.

Full working

24÷4=624 \div 4 = 6, then 6×3=186 \times 3 = 18.

7. I multiply a number by 5 and subtract 3. The result is 42. Find the number.

Hint

Work backwards: first undo the subtraction, then the multiplication.

Full working

42+3=4542 + 3 = 45, then 45÷5=945 \div 5 = 9. Check: 9×5−3=429 \times 5 - 3 = 42. ✓

8. Write a single expression for the cost of the stock in the chapter problem and evaluate it.

Hint

Cost =120×0.65+8×1.85= 120 \times 0.65 + 8 \times 1.85. Multiplication before addition.

Full working

120×0.65=78120 \times 0.65 = 78 and 8×1.85=14.808 \times 1.85 = 14.80, so the cost is 78+14.80=£92.8078 + 14.80 = £92.80.
