GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

Chapter 6: Review

The chapter problem, solved

The account starts with £600 and earns 4% compound interest each year. The multiplier is 1.04, so after two years:

600×1.042=648.96600 × 1.04^2 = 648.96

The balance is £648.96, which is more than £640. The estimate was close enough to predict the direction, and the exact method gives the balance.

Answers and concise solutions

1. 12% of 250

Answer: 10% is 25 and 2% is 5, so 12% is 30.

Answers and concise solutions

1. Final price

Answer: £118.80

Answers and concise solutions

1. Original value

Answer: The reduction is 20% of the original, so £80 is 80% of the original. 80÷0.8=£10080 ÷ 0.8 = £100.

Answers and concise solutions

1. Compare interest types

Answer: Simple: £1,120. Compound: £1,123.60.

2. Compare

Answer: Compound interest earns interest on earlier interest.

Answers and concise solutions

1. Net effect

Answer: £990, which is £10 less than the start.
