GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

5.4 Inverse proportion — Practise with help

Try each question first. Open a hint if you are stuck, the next step for one concrete move, and the full working only to check.

Warm-up: remember

Answer these from memory. Do not look back at the section.

  1. Work out 9+(−4)9+(-4).
  2. Work out 6×156\times15.
Check the warm-up
  1. 9+(−4)=59+(-4)=5.
  2. 6×15=906\times15=90.

If an answer differs, revisit Section 1.3 for negative numbers and Section 1.2 for multiplication facts.

Practise with help

1. 4 workers take 18 days. How long do 6 workers take, at the same rate?

Hint

The product of workers and days stays fixed.

Next step

The fixed product is 4×18=724\times18=72 worker-days.

Full working

The time is 72÷6=1272\div6=12 days. Check: 6×12=726\times12=72.

2. yy is inversely proportional to xx. When x=6x=6, y=4y=4. Find yy when x=8x=8.

Hint

Write y=k/xy=k/x, so the product xyxy stays fixed.

Next step

k=6×4=24k=6\times4=24.

Full working

y=24÷8=3y=24\div8=3. Check: 8×3=248\times3=24.

3. 5 pumps empty a tank in 24 minutes. How long do 8 pumps take at the same rate?

Hint

Find the fixed product of pumps and minutes.

Next step

5×24=1205\times24=120 pump-minutes.

Full working

120÷8=15120\div8=15 minutes. Check: 8×15=1208\times15=120.

4. Earlier learning. Work out −8+3-8+3 and 7−(−2)7-(-2).

Hint

Picture a number line. Start at the first number and move along it.

Next step

For −8+3-8+3, count 3 to the right from −8-8. Subtracting −2-2 moves 2 to the right.

Full working

−8+3=−5-8+3=-5, and 7−(−2)=7+2=97-(-2)=7+2=9.
