GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

19.1 Perimeter and area of 2D shapes — Practise with help

Warm-up: remember

Try these closed-book before checking.

  1. Work out 7×87\times8.
  2. Convert 2 m to centimetres.
Check your answers
  1. 5656. 2. 200200 cm.

Practise with help

Attempt each question first. Open the hint, then the next step, when needed.

1. A rectangular flower bed is 11 m long and 6 m wide. Work out its perimeter.

Hint

Perimeter is the distance around the edge. This rectangle has two sides of 11 m and two sides of 6 m.

Next step

Add one length and one width, then double the total: 2(11+6)2(11+6).

Full working

P=2×11+2×6=22+12=34 mP=2\times11+2\times6=22+12=34\text{ m}.

2. A parallelogram has base 12 cm and perpendicular height 5 cm. Work out its area.

Hint

Use the base and the perpendicular height. The sloping side is not the height.

Next step

Multiply the base by the perpendicular height: 12×512\times5.

Full working

A=12×5=60 cm2A=12\times5=60\text{ cm}^2.

3. A trapezium has parallel sides 9 cm and 15 cm, and perpendicular height 6 cm. Work out its area.

Hint

A trapezium's area is the average of its parallel sides multiplied by the perpendicular height.

Next step

Average the parallel sides first: (9+15)÷2=12(9+15)\div2=12.

Full working

A=9+152×6=12×6=72 cm2A=\frac{9+15}{2}\times6=12\times6=72\text{ cm}^2.
