GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

10.1 Term-to-term and position-to-term rules — Practise with help

Try each item before opening its hints. Reveal the full working when you want to check your reasoning.

Warm-up: remember

  1. Work out 6+46+4.
  2. Find the 5th term of 2n2n.
  3. Write the next term: 10,7,4,…10,7,4,\ldots.
Check your warm-up
  1. 1010.
  2. 1010.
  3. 11; subtract 33.

Practise with help

1. Continue 2,6,10,14,…2,6,10,14,\ldots by two terms.

Hint

Find the change between adjacent terms.

One step

Add 44 each time: 14+4=1814+4=18, then 18+4=2218+4=22.

Full working

The terms are 18,2218,22.

2. The rule is 5n+15n+1. Find the 4th term.

Hint

Substitute n=4n=4.

One step

5(4)+1=20+15(4)+1=20+1.

Full working

The 4th term is 2121.

3. A sequence begins 8,13,18,23,…8,13,18,23,\ldots. Find the nth term.

Hint

The change is 55, so begin with 5n5n.

One step

At position 1, 5n=55n=5 but the term is 8, so add 3.

Full working

The rule is 5n+35n+3.
