GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

21.1 Parts of a circle — Practise

Work independently. Questions become more demanding as you progress. Check your answers after you have attempted the set.

  1. A circle has radius 5.25.2 cm. Work out its diameter.
  2. A circle has diameter 1818 mm. Work out its radius.
  3. A circle has radius 77 cm. Is a chord of length 1313 cm possible? Give a reason.
  4. A circle has radius 44 cm. Work out its diameter, then name the circle boundary.
  5. A circle has diameter 1414 cm. Work out its radius, then name the region between a chord and its arc.
  6. A line through the centre joins two points on the circumference. If the radius is 33 cm, work out the line length and explain why it is also a chord.
  7. The radius is 3.753.75 cm. Work out the diameter.
  8. A straight line touches a circle at exactly one point. Name the line and state how many points of contact it has.
  9. A line joins two points on a circle and passes through its centre. If the radius is 55 cm, work out the line length and give both correct names.
  10. A chord is 1616 cm long and is the diameter. Find the radius.
Answers and concise solutions

1. Diameter from radius

Answer: 10.410.4 cm

2. Radius from diameter

Answer: 99 mm

3. Check a chord length

Answer: Yes. The diameter is 1414 cm, so a 1313 cm chord is shorter than the longest possible chord.

4. Circle vocabulary

Answer: The diameter is 88 cm. The boundary is the circumference.

5. Name the segment

Answer: The radius is 77 cm. The region is a segment.

6. Diameter and chord

Answer: The line is a diameter of length 66 cm. It is also a chord because it joins two points on the circumference.

7. Decimal radius

Answer: 7.57.5 cm

8. Name the tangent

Answer: It is a tangent, with one point of contact.

9. Name the line

Answer: The line is 1010 cm long. It is both a chord and a diameter.

10. Radius of a diameter

Answer: 88 cm
