GCSE Mathematics (9-1)

Chapter 16 Review

Resolve the chapter problem

The pattern can be solved by applying each angle fact in turn. At the straight path, adjacent angles total 180∘180^\circ. At a crossing, vertically opposite angles match. Parallel borders let you transfer corresponding or alternate angles, while co-interior angles total 180∘180^\circ. The triangular tile has interior sum 180∘180^\circ. State the fact beside every calculation, then check the total fits the shape.

Mixed practice

For each question, choose the method and give a reason.

  1. Two lines cross. One angle is 62∘62^\circ. Find the other three.
  2. A transversal crosses parallel lines. One angle is 73∘73^\circ. Find its alternate angle and co-interior angle.
  3. A triangle has angles 41∘41^\circ, x∘x^\circ and (x+19)∘(x+19)^\circ. Find xx.
  4. A quadrilateral has angles 85∘85^\circ, 95∘95^\circ, 110∘110^\circ and x∘x^\circ. Find xx.
  5. Find each interior angle of a regular octagon.
  6. An exterior angle of a regular polygon is 40∘40^\circ. Find the number of sides.
  7. Earlier learning: solve 4x+7=314x+7=31.
  8. Higher only: prove that the exterior angle of a triangle equals the sum of its two opposite interior angles.
Check your answers
  1. 62∘62^\circ, 118∘118^\circ, 118∘118^\circ; opposite angles match and adjacent angles form a straight line.
  2. Alternate: 73∘73^\circ; co-interior: 107∘107^\circ.
  3. 41+x+x+19=18041+x+x+19=180, so x=60x=60.
  4. x=70∘x=70^\circ, using the quadrilateral sum 360∘360^\circ.
  5. (8−2)180÷8=135∘(8-2)180\div8=135^\circ.
  6. 360÷40=9360\div40=9 sides.
  7. x=6x=6.
  8. Let the interior angles be a,b,ca,b,c and exterior angle ee. Then a+b+c=180a+b+c=180 and e+c=180e+c=180. Subtracting cc gives e=a+be=a+b.

Write one angle fact you can now explain with a reason. Which question made you choose between two possible methods? Note what helped you decide.
