Chapter 1: Number systems and the four operations
The number systems, the four operations on them, and the properties those operations obey.
The chapter problem
The class trip budget. Your year group is planning a trip. You will work with the numbers on the quotes — totals, deposits, per-person shares and a few negative balances — and by the end of the chapter you can say what the trip really costs and whether the money works out.
Where it is used: Budgets, quotes, invoices, and any calculation you check twice.
Your turn to connect it: Where in your own week do you use a negative number, or need to be sure a total is right?
